The Wine:
The 2023 season was the coldest on record for Tolpuddle. These cooler conditions combined with a wet winter that lead into flowering resulted in hen and chicken (bunches with a combination of small and normal size grapes) keeping overall yields low. What does this me for you and I? Unfortunately, much less wine. The Chardonnay was more affected than the Pinot, with the later part of the vintage possessing near perfect conditions, resulting in lovely fruit development right through to harvest.

David Matters' View:
"This wine is perfectly balanced - the best new release Tolpuddle Pinot I have seen to date. There have been numerous new clones planted in the vineyard and these are definitely having an impact, along with a reduction in whole bunch ferments (I believe it is 25% for the 2023). There is a finesse and seamlessness about this wine. it just flows.

It has the bright, aromatic freshness we expect from Pinot Noir of raspberries and strawberries, subtly moving into a darker cherry fruit spectrum with complex savoury spice interwoven seamlessly and firm, structural tannin. Fruit density and depth of flavour reflect the cool season. Very poised and very long, yet approachable in its youth. Time will deliver a stellar wine."

The Review:
Huon Hooke, The Real Review - 97pts
“Deep red-purple, bright and clear colour; superb rich ripe black cherry fragrance with a kiss of smoky oak, the palate remarkably full and rich, smooth and fleshy with excellent texture and immediate drinking appeal, although it has the legs to age well too. Serious structure, but also succulent, sweet and plush—almost too much of a good thing. Outstanding pinot noir.”
