Living Roots is the joining of forces between Sebastian Hardy, great-great-great grandson of national icon Thomas Hardy, and New York-born Colleen. The young couple met at Hardy’s Tintara when Colleen worked as cellar hand during vintage in 2014, and in 2016 they started their own vinous joint venture. Uniquely, the two make wines both from South Australia and from the Finger Lakes district in New York state, with small winery operations and tasting rooms set up in Adelaide Hills and Rochester NY, respectively. The overall style is free-spirited and innovative, but always incredibly well-made, and the range constantly evolves with rolling vintages and fruit sources.

Aka our Riesling Pét-Nat: A tribute to the legends who brought us Aussie Dry Rizza and the ultimate sherbet treat in the ‘60s, in the form of an ancient, yet re-emerging, style of Sparkling. Riesling from our family’s K1 vineyard, picked with high acidity and rich flavours thanks to the cooler vintage, and made in the Pétillant Naturel style. On first sniff, you’ll get zesty citrus and lemongrass, with racy acidity and juicy white nectarine flavours.

From K1 Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Some sulphur added in vineyard by accident, and cold stabilised, so pet nat, well, sorta, but hey, the style is there.

Hazy in glass, cloudy apple juice looking thing. Scents of banana-esque yeasty characters, cashew nuts, lemon juice. Spritely and sparkly wine, very bright, super dry, bitter kind of feel that’s very refreshing, almost tart-juice-like rather than vinous but hey, pet nat, fun! Delicious drinking.
