Region: McLaren Vale, SA
Grape: Sangiovese
First Glance: Ripe red cherry, lifting freshness, supple tannins
A family-led winery in the Willunga foothills of McLaren Vale, strongly focused on sustainability throughout the entire operation, Hedonist is not just a staple of the Best Cellars range, but likewise a sure-fire value option for those who like deftly crafted, easy-to-drink and varietally expressive wines. The team in the cellar is Walter Clappis, a veteran winemaker of 36 vintages, daughter, Kimberly and her partner James Cooter. All of the Hedonist wines are made with certified organic and biodynamic fruit, with biodynamic preparations and organic compost made on-site. The range focusses on accessible and skilfully made varietal expressions, tweaked with subtle technique to bring out the best qualities in each. Vegan friendly.
Sangiovese is known from its prominent role in Italian classics such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino (as well as being Italy's most planted red grape!). It's charm lies in the beautifully defined red fruit and sometimes herbal characters on display, as well as lifted acidity and fine tannins of the variety. Fruit sourced from the Sellicks foothills on clayey sand and silica soils and unconsolidated sand in McLaren Vale. Aged for 9 months in seasoned 300L French oak
The Wine
Deep ruby red with purple hues. Lush red berries with primary fruits at the fore and a hint of sweet paprika.
Summer red berries carry through. Supple fine-grain tannins and bright acidity provide balance, length and an ultimately moreish palate.
