The Wine
From Marten Doebbie’s vineyard just outside of the Lobethal township, Adelaide Hills. 440m elevation, gentle eastern aspect, situated in a valley where rainfall is higher and colder air stays for longer than surrounding areas. This leads to great acid retention, which enables texture to be built into the wine. Made for enjoyment from the get go. Slow whole bunch pressing, slow & cool natural fermentation in 2/3 barrel & 1/3 stainless steel. 10 months of oak aging post on fine lees, 15% new oak.

Lobethal. “New vineyard – planted post bushfires in 2020. 76 clone, gentle east facing slope.” 15% new oak.
Golden colour. A rich and nutty wine, quite saline with a distinct umami flavour, plus a little spice, aniseed and nectarine. It’s quite thick and savoury, but has a good bite of citrus acidity, spiced apple and sizzled butter, with a salty chicken stock finish of good length, and a sort of preserved lemon tang in the aftertaste. It’s of a style that some will love, and others, maybe less so. For the record, I like it. Lots of interest.
