Barossa folklore claims the pioneers were so frugal that when they killed a pig on the farm for meat and smallgoods, they used everything but the squeal.

When we make our Alicante Bouchet Rosè, the grapes are pressed immediately so the skins are not used. As the keepers of Barossa tradition, we couldn’t allow this to go on. Immediately after the juice is drained, we crush Grenache and Mataro onto Alicante skins and ferment them together before finally basket pressing. The addition of the Alicante skins makes a critical contribution to this wine, enhancing flavour, tannin and spice. The Frugal Farmer is medium bodied yet full flavoured and is lower in alcohol than our other red wines. This wine is also the exception to the rule when it comes to our commitment to two-year oak aging and is best enjoyed in its youth.

The dry conditions through winter of 2018 meant yields were lower for the 2019 vintage, however the quality of fruit was not impacted. Vintage itself was compressed, which added pressure to the grape pickers and winery team. Despite the challenging conditions, the 2019 Frugal Farmer is a wine that holds true to the Rockford style.
