Region: Central Otago, NZ
Grape: Pinot Noir
First Glance: Vibrant dark fruit, high-toned, grippy tannin
Acclaim: 96+ points
When Mount Edward was started back in 1997, the sole focus was Pinot Noir. While this noble grape is still firmly rooted in the estae's DNA, today the winery pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the region, with a range of single vineyard bottlings, explorations of sub-regional sites and a range of exciting new varietals in the ground. All estate grown fruit is Bio Grow certified organic, and traditional approaches and minimal intervention is used to craft wines of honesty and personality, with no must adjustments, wild fermentations and sensibly measured additions of SO2.
This single vineyard expression of Central Otago Pinot, comes entirely from the Morrison Vineyard in the Pisa sub-region. When asked about the reason for singling out this block, winemaker Duncan Forsyth explains that it is all about the texture and tannin profile here. The wine, like all Mount Edwards wines is high toned and elegant, but with an added dimension of depth and tannic coil, which will greatly reward cellaring.
The Review:
96+ points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
Expressive, personality imbued wine that marches to its own beat. Very brambly, dark fruited, autumnal and savoury, with, indeed, this beautiful thread of fine, lacy tannins of a graphite, smoky spice, earthy ilk. Long, luxurious and Italianate by nature, the wine finds kin in alpine nebb and nerello mascalese, a grip and grunt, yet freshness, lightness and cool nature to fruit character, albeit back seat. Don’t expect the bullish pinots and concentration. Gossamer, fine, fresh, savoury to the core. You could say unlike anything from Otago, which seems unfair, as it describes its place with strength. Wonderful pinot.
