Region: McLaren Vale, SA
Grape: Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre
First Glance: Medium-bodied, raspberry, lavender, gentle cinnamon spice
A family-led winery in the Willunga foothills of McLaren Vale, strongly focused on sustainability throughout the entire operation, Hedonist is not just a staple of the Best Cellars range, but likewise a sure-fire value option for those who like deftly crafted, easy-to-drink and varietally expressive wines. The team in the cellar is Walter Clappis, a veteran winemaker of 36 vintages, daughter, Kimberly and her partner James Cooter. All of the Hedonist wines are made with certified organic and biodynamic fruit, with biodynamic preparations and organic compost made on-site. The range focusses on accessible and skilfully made varietal expressions, tweaked with subtle technique to bring out the best qualities in each. Vegan friendly.
The Grenache is taken from two different blocks: 50-year-old vines in McLaren Flat and a younger parcel from Kangarilla. The Shiraz component hails from Blewitt Springs’ deep sandy soil, while the Mataro was also sourced from Kangarilla. Aged in a mix of seasoned small and large format French oak for 12 months.
The Wine
Perfumed with lavender, blue fruits, fresh raspberry and a delicate cinnamon note. Very approachable mid weight, velvety mouthfeel revealing raspberry and blue fruits, as well as more savoury spice, carried by superfine, moreish tannins.
