The Wine

The few rows of Carignan at TTT produced bunches just half the size of others in the area, and the 2020 cuvée is a blend of 75% TTT and 25% Camp 4. Vinified separately in whole bunches and partial carbonic deliciousness, it was bottled after five months in neutral French oak, without fining or filtration. Eric and Lyle were excited to find 2020 to be their best Carignan yet, an easy-drinking, light-bodied, fresh red that's loaded with flavors of plum, cranberry, baking spices, and sandalwood. It has a pronounced “umami” salinity from the nearby ocean air, and a luminosity from the 2020 vintage that makes it a perfect match for saucisson, charcuterie, and of course the ubiquitous burger or pizza night!

The Producers

Railsback Frères began as a rosé project in 2014 by brothers Lyle and Eric Railsback, who call their rosé “Les Rascasses” (scorpion fish in French) as an homage to Lulu Peyraud. Lulu was the proprietress of Domaine Tempier in Bandol, maker of their favorite rosé in Provence. Lyle did National Sales for legendary French importer Kermit Lynch for twelve years before leaving to focus on the Santa Ynez project. His brother Eric started Lieu Dit wines in Santa Barbara, inspired by wines of the Loire valley, and owns Verve Wine in NYC and San Francisco.

The Review

"These Railsback wines from Santa Ynez are not profound wines, but they offer drinking appeal that’s off the charts. Importer: Whole Bunch Wines

Bright red fruits, spicy perfume and a sort of porcini mushroom savouriness. Lively, fresh red fruits, a light dusting of tannin, cranberry freshness, finishes dry and crisp with a little pomegranate tang. Lovely fine ‘mineral’ feel here, and plenty of energy. It can gladly take a slight chill. Frisky fun drinking of considerable charm. It’s a wine made for drinking, rather than scoring."
