Mount Edward Ted Pinot Gris 2020

Region: Central Otago, NZ
Grape: Pinot Gris
First Glance: Rich, succulent, gently nutty
Acclaim: 92 points

When Mount Edward was started back in 1997, the sole focus was Pinot Noir. While this noble grape is still firmly rooted in the estate's DNA, today the winery pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the region, with a range of single vineyard bottlings, explorations of sub-regional sites and a range of exciting new varietals in the ground. All estate grown fruit is Bio Grow certified organic, and traditional approaches and minimal intervention is used to craft wines of honesty and personality, with no must adjustments, wild fermentations and sensibly measured additions of SO2.

The TED range is Mount Edwards value driven entry range, but always with the estate DNA clearly showing in the wines. More easy drinking than the premium estate wines, but with heaps more personality and interest than their position in the line-up would imply. The Pinot Gris shows its Central Otago origins well in the richer end of the spectrum for the grape, but all in balance with purity of fruit and refreshing acidity.

The Review:
92 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
(2019 vintage)
Gris of Grisness.

Bold, richer style but with fine cut of lifted acidity and faintest lees-nutty savoury characters. Big on the green pear zone, licks of guava and lychee, floral too. Lots going on. Complex, generous white of quintessential varietal character but delivering and uplifting and more complex experience.
