The Wine:
Yeringberg is one of the oldest and finest producers in the Yarra Valley, and the de Pury family have been growing grapes and fruit, as well as raising lamb and cattle, on their Coldstream hill since 1863. Today the estate is lead by the talented, and thoroughly down to earth, Sandra de Pury. The operation is remarkably old fashioned, with a hands on effort in the vineyard and a low-tech approach in the cellar, under the old wooden winery building. These are some of the most honest, detailed and delightfully under-stated wines coming out of the valley.

2021 was a memorable vintage, a wringing wet start during winter and spring, thankfully followed by mild growing season. Flowering was good; ripening long and dry. Picked in two passes for freshness and depth of flavour. The result is ripe fruit and tannins with only moderate alcohol levels.

From 50+ year old vines. Botanical notes of acacias, waxy chamomile, orange blossom and a dash of cinnamon. Rich enveloping yellow peach, quince, beeswax on the palate. Finishes mineral, moreish, and long. Splendid stuff.

The Review:

“62% Marsanne and 38% Roussanne. Vines planted 1973-85. The 2 varieties were picked & made separately, blended just before bottling.”

"Apple, lime, apricot, ginger and honey, chamomile tea and cinnamon. It’s nutty and savoury, white fleshed fruit with a juicy peach and apricot richness, dusty and spicy, a fine chalkiness to it, a real white Rhône mouth-perfume about it, honey and almond, with a long rich and grainy finish. Terrific wine."
