2019 KING’S WOOD SHIRAZ
Royal Oaks and King’s Wood were forests planted by monarchs to build cathedrals and navies. Long term planning. The beautiful old French oak in these giant foudre vessels is perfect for schooling and gently, gradually polishing and protecting the brightest, spiciest Shiraz we grow on Yangarra.
The 2019 growing season was very dry, which resulted in incredibly low yields. We had a relatively warm lead up to the ripening period, which produced a very condensed and fast harvest. These late ripening varieties faired very well in a season like this, giving rise to concentration, freshness of flavour and marked natural acidity.
Sourced exclusively from Block 12 (2.3 ha) which sits on an east facing, ironstone sandy outcrop. Hand-picked, 25% whole bunches and the remainder has been mechanical berry sorted. Cold soaked in open fermenters and plunged to ensure colour and tannins are infused into the wine. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Exclusively matured in 25hL French oak Foudre for 15 months. Bottled August 2018.
95 POINTS — “Remarkable poise for such a young wine, dark fruits, blood and ironstone all meld seamlessly.” – The Real Review, Stuart Knox, April
