“This release is reminiscent of the savoury funk of our 2014 Chardonnays which also looked quite harmonious in their youth. Funky and complex, this is an excellent example of cool vintage Heytesbury Chardonnay.” Virginia Willcock, Vasse Felix Chief Winemaker
Made from 100% Gingin clone selections, the palate displays the typical linear acidity and al dente texture that defines the powerful structure of this wine.
Made from a selection of the most unique and striking vineyard plots at Vasse Felix. 2019 was a cool and late harvest season which saw the Heytesbury selections hand picked in March, two to four weeks later than the previous 10 year average. Hand-harvested at ‘al dente’ ripeness, the whole bunches were pressed and transferred direct to barrel as unclarified juice. The wine was fermented with 100% wild yeast from the vineyard and remained in barrel for 9 months with some battonage. With high natural acidity, winemakers allowed natural malolactic fermentation to complete 100%.
Taut, refined, lengthy white of fine boned nature, inward concentration, citrus and green apple, lots of flint too. Serious feeling wine. Complex and detailed, of a modern Australian chardonnay ilk, with flavour and energy to boot. Great wine here.
