Under new, hands-on ownership and with the talented young Kaspar Hermann at the winemaking helm, Toolangi have the wind in their sails. After years of (arguably) living in the shadow of the Pinot, Toolangi's Shiraz is now starting to flex its muscles. The grapes are now being cultivated and harvested with freshness to the fore and the winemaking has also been re-focused along the same lines. In short, with emphasis on elegance, balance and sustained purity, Toolangi's Shiraz wines have never tasted better. None of this should surprise really, the Yarra has long been capable of producing outstanding Syrah/Shiraz.

Hand-harvested from Toolangi's A1 and D1 Blocks, the 2018 was naturally fermented with 25% whole bunches in both open fermenters and closed statics. The wine was then matured in French oak hogsheads and puncheons for six months. A small portion (10%) was new oak with a small portion also kept in tank for freshness. The result is a finely drawn, cool climate shiraz whose floral perfume of violets, cassis, raspberries and dark cherries reveals a hint of restrained oak, spice, pepper and charcuterie. It's long and elegant, with a pristine core of dark berries, plums and cherries tightly knit with gentle oak and supported by fine, dusty tannins. It finishes savoury, with a refreshing acidity.

"17yo vines, 25% whole bunches, 10% new French oak. It's tight and reserved at this early stage of its life but the components are good.
