The Wine

Terra de Cuques is a blend of 90% Pedro Ximénez from the clay soils from Le Molar and 10% Moscatel de Alejandría from the north-facing slate soils of Porrera. The source vineyards face northeast and are 400-600m above sea level. The aspect means the vines are sheltered from the sun’s harshest rays, while the altitude results in cool nights that lock in refreshing acidity. The bush vines also play their role in maximising coolness and freshness.

As with the Pedra de Guix below, this white has evolved towards a more precise and focussed style. In the cellar the PX was layered in a wine press and gently pressed by foot over a period of one hour; then, it was basket pressed, providing a combination of extraction and maceration. The Muscat portion was made in the same way that the domaine makes its reds: whole clusters were layered in a fermentation tank where the weight of the bunches created enough juice for fermentation to begin spontaneously. Then, after one to two weeks, the wine was pressed and finished fermentation in a concrete tank.

The 2019 is tightly packed and fit to burst with entrancing texture, grippy phenolics and pithy citrus flavours. Trademark salinity ripples throughout, accompanied by rocky minerals, heady spice and cool floral beauty from the Muscat. It’s a wonderful and unique expression of high-country Priorat—with mouth-coating texture and energising, beautifully entwined, mineral grip.

The Review

"Intense aromas of dried pineapple, lemon, orange blossom, chamomile, salted almond and cardamom. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Concentrated, with umami character." 93 points, James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
