2018 Somos Valle de Ojos Negros 'Nebbicholo'
Nebbiolo/Shiraz/Malec Co-Ferment 12.9% ABV
This vintage of Somos came out of a new region within Baja California, approximately 30 km southwest of Valle de Guadalupe, called Valle de Ojos Negros. It is the highest altitude area in Baja, and is known for its cool nights and hot days during the vintage period. It is known as Ojos Negros or Black Eyes because of the frozen marshes it can get during winter, and can be seen as you drive down into the valley. The vineyard was planted by Mauricio’s family, and is mainly planted to Shiraz, Malbec, and Nebbiolo.
The Nebbicholo is a co-ferment of Nebbiolo, Shiraz, and Malbec. All varieties were hand-harvested on the same day in late September. All of the Nebbiolo and Malbec were placed into the tank as whole-bunch, and all the Shiraz was destemmed on top. It wild-fermented on low temperatures for 25 days. It spent 6 months on lees, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. No additions were made to this wine, except for 25 ppm of SO2 before bottling.
The wine is aromatic, jumping out of the glass with a very unique style. Blue fruits leap out initially, with blue berries and plums predominating, floral notes of wild thyme, pepper, and subtle spices finishing with a smoky almost mezcal-esque herbaceous aroma. In the mouth it is soft, juicy and spicy. A plush, blue centred mid palate, with generous but restrained fruit, leaving a medium bodied approachability that keeps you coming back. There is just a hint of that firm, austere, but inviting nebbiolo tannin tethering the wine together, and bringing a savoury versatility to this fun, fresh red.
