“This tiny winery, tucked away in a sleepy corner of North Canterbury, has always had a range of wines from purchased fruit, in addition to the several Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs produced from the estate vineyard. Established by Mike and Claudia Weersing, it's now owned by the Smith and Sheth partnership,
with Huw Kinch (formerly Larry McKenna's assistant winemaker at Escarpment) installed as the onsite general manager/winemaker. Of the current releases, the single-plot Chardonnays from 2019 are the standouts.” – Joe Czerwinski
"A paean to the previous owners of Pyramid Valley, Mike and Claudia Weersing; legends of NZ wine and such wonderful people. A skin contact Pinot Gris here, unfined, unfiltered, with minimal sulphur.
Lipton Ice peach tea, orange rind and Japanese pickled ginger, slightly musky, dusty and peppery. Juicy peach and apricot flavours with a layer of spice and gentle nutty umami character, subtle white pepper tannin, a freshening juicy orange tang, and a perfumed finish of excellent length. It’s a clean, refreshing and beautifully turned out version of orange wine, and lovely to drink. I’m going to guzzle it."
