Gaillard’s Saint-Joseph rouge is drawn from several parcels located in the high country of Malleval and Chavanay—high altitude sites in the far north of this sprawling appellation, closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône. The steep, cool soils here have plenty of granite, which contributes to the mineral cut of this perfumed and vibrant Syrah. Each parcel was vinified separately. Aging was mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels for 18 months and the wine has been bottled unfiltered.

The nose is loaded with dark cherry, coffee and iodine notes while the palate is vibrantly fresh and floral for a sunny vintage, with both red and dark cherry, rose and a hint of something bloody. Lovely, lovely Syrah that is already a joy to drink.

“Also in tank when I visited, the early bottling of Gaillard's 2018 Saint Joseph looks to be another slurpable wine. It's full-bodied, creamy and lush, with crushed-stone accents, ripe blackberries and a salty-mineral note on the finish.” 90-92 points, Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate
