The Clos de Cuminaille is one of the most privileged sites of Saint-Joseph. It’s an east-facing, walled vineyard on Chavanay’s pure granite soils and it produces one of the most distinctive wines of the appellation each year. When Gaillard bought this three-hectare site, he passed on the chance to buy a slice of the now-renowned La Turque vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, a site that he had helped plant. He simply felt the Clos de Cuminaille was the better site—which gives you an idea of why it produces such special wines. The vines here are now almost 30 years old.

Again, this is so fresh and vibrant and pure. The descriptors below sum up the wine well, but I would also stress the class, finesse and freshness on offer here. A wine built on perfume.

“Brilliant violet. Lively cherry and mulberry scents are complemented by suggestions of cracked pepper, violet and olive. Smooth and gently sweet, offering spice-tinged black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors that firm up on the back half. A smoky mineral note appears on the clinging finish, which is given shape by supple, even tannins.” 91 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous

“The 2018 Saint Joseph Clos de Cuminaille had been blended but then put back into barrel, so I tasted from two barrels of different ages. The new one showed vanilla accents, but both highlighted ripe cherries, a medium to full-bodied palate, silky tannins and a long, fine finish.” 91-93 points, Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate
