The Wine

2018 has been hailed as one of the best since 2000 and certainly a change of fortune as the previous vintage was notably seen as one of the worst in memory. Despite challenging conditions with fluctuating weather such as spring frosts and early summer rainfall it became stable prior to summer harvest. Both quantity and quality was rated as exceptional.

With the alps on three sides in the country’s mountainous North West, Piedmont creates some of Italy’s finest red wines. This elegant and complex wine displays the lifted aromatics, bright red fruits and fine tannins so expressive of Langhe Nebbiolo. It’s smooth and medium bodied with dark berries. hints of dried herb and nunaces of leather. Approachable now but will benefit mid-term cellaring. Pair it with some rustic pork and fennel sausages on creamy parmesan polenta.

The Review

"Dark cherry, slight wet earthiness, some dried rose and liquorice, and also shows spicy biscuit and toasty oak. It’s fairly ripe and juicy, slightly sappy tang to acidity, powdery/dusty feel to tannin, and some additional sweetness laid on via spicy oak. Finish is modest, but good enough. Modern and polished style, but has character of region and grape, no doubt."
