2018 was an archetypal growing season with consistent winter rains and favorable weather conditions throughout a mild spring. A dry summer led to earlier than expected picking dates and smaller yields. With the arrival of autumn, cool temperatures elongated the growing season producing grapes with concentrated flavours and balanced acidity. Although the individual components of this wine are mighty, the sum of The Peake’s parts is magnificent. The Cabernet shines aromatically with notes of blackberry pie and dark chocolate, while the Shiraz fills the mid-palate with black plum and toasty oak. Fine tannins and balanced acidity contribute to an incredibly long finish. The Peake continues to honor the legacy of this iconic Australian blend.
Cabernet Sauvignon Blocks: 200 Block (35%), 300 Block (20%), Shiraz Blocks: 200 Block (31%), 300 Block (14%)
The two varieties were hand-picked, destemmed and fermented separately. During fermentation, the Shiraz was plunged three times daily while the Cabernet was pumped over daily. Both varieties were left on skins for a minimum of 18 days and gently basket pressed. The Cabernet matured for 15 months in fine-grained Bordeaux coopered barrels while a mixture of puncheons and barriques were used for the Shiraz. In total, 50% of the French oak was new. The finest barrels were selected and blended together shortly before bottling.
"This isn’t released until July 2020 but if Australian cabernet shiraz blends are to your liking then this release is worth jumping on as soon as you can. It’s a seriously good wine. Its volume and silken mouthfeel announce themselves from the first sip but then the long chains of tannin, tobacco and dust and floral-like highlights, and compelling length serve to seal a quite wonderful deal. This is hearty, full-bodied Australian red wine in all its glory. It’s built on redcurrant, plum, blackcurrant and cloves and the mouthfeel/length combination here is really quite something."
