The Wine
Along with the Navazos-Niepoort bottling, La Bota de Florpower is Navazos’ second single-vineyard white wine and inspired by a period in Andalucían wine history before fortification was the norm. While the Navazos-Niepoort is sourced from Jerez's de-facto Grand Cru vineyard, Macharnudo Alto, this wine comes from Sanlúcar’s own blue-ribbon (and most revered) terroir, the pago Miraflores.
As opposed to the power and structure of Macharnudo in Jerez, here the Tosca Cerrada albariza soils give more roundness and floral charm to the wines, as well as plenty of the oyster shell/iodine salinity that we expect of Sanlúcar wines. There’s some waxy, complex, reductive and secondary notes from the time aging under flor and also some gentle nuttiness from the sherry cask. The second major difference is that Florpower spends considerably more time under flor; eight months in bota (without fortification) followed by a further eleven months in tank, meaning this 2016 spent 19 months under flor in total. This is more vibrant and racier than the 2015, but it is starting to open and offers plenty of seductive flesh and loads of interest now. A superb and unique white wine.

The Review
“… 2016 was a milder year, especially the summer, and the wine is fresh, sharp and precise. It's very much marked by the vineyard, as it's selected from the old vines from Miraflores, grapes that have unusual power and intensity, but at the same time, it keeps great balance and finesse. 3,000 bottles were filled in the spring of 2018.” 94 points, Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
