Domenica Gamay 2022

| /

Region: Beechworth, VIC
Grape: Gamay
First Glance: Bright, purple fruit, perfumed

Domenica was started in 2012 by Peter Graham, formerly a winemaker at neighbouring Giaconda for 13 years. As it happens, some - a fair bit, of that stardust robbed off on the then young winemaker, who now crafts incredible Chardonnay, sumptuous Shiraz and elegant Nebbiolo, among others, from his own estate and vines.

New grapes ahoy! The 2022 vintage marks the first release of this new-comer to the Domenica line-up. The Gamay was grafted onto older vines in 2019, and is now ready to produce an intriguingly fresh and fruit-forward wine. Two separate ferments, one fully destemmed and the other 30% whole bunch with lots of punch overs. Basket pressed to oak on lees for about 10 months before being bottled unfiltered.
Here’s the write up on this new release: The wine is super bright and perfumed but without the confectionery. Still a little of that carbonic character though. Lots of bright purple fruit and that granitic terroir derived earthiness. Fine tannins, structure and minerality resemble the great cru Beaujolais wines of Morgon. Drink or hold for a few years but definitely don't miss out.
