The Wine:
Sitting above Les Bonnes Mares, Les Véroilles is the highest and coolest 1er Cru in Chambolle. Only a small part of this vineyard is 1er Cru (upgraded in 1987), and Ghislaine Barthod owns the entire parcel (0.37 hectares), making it a 1er Cru monopole. Some of the vines sit on bare rock, which—irrespective of vintage—explains the incredible minerality and freshness of this cuvée. Of course, the altitude and proximity to the forest also contribute to the wine’s wildly aromatic, juicy persona. The vines have an average age of 50 years and give a wine of tremendous finesse and purity.
The Review:
William Kelley, The Wine Advocate - 95pts
"To my palate, the king of the cellar this year is the 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Véroilles, a medium to full-bodied, pure and racy wine redolent of red berries, wet stones, rose petals and wild cherries. Deep and concentrated, it's taut and intensely flavored, with a bright spine of acidity and a searingly mineral finish. My handwritten notes conclude with "like licking stones!" This will delight Burgundy purists."
