Chatto Glengarry Vineyard – ‘20 years between drinks’

Planted in 1991, Glengarry Vineyard is located on the West Tamar, but more inland, and at higher altitude, than the majority of Tamar vineyards. This makes for a slighter cooler, later ripening site, providing real purity, and focus, to the bright red and black fruits and lifted florals. A spicy mix of three (predominantly Dijon) clones: 115 (50%) MV6 (25%) and D5V12 (25%) Jim first made Pinot from this site way back in 1999, and the inaugural Chatto Pinot in 2000. Feels full circle to have this special wine back in the range.

The Review

"As I understand it, the Chatto family have a dog called ‘Gary’, which is correctly spelt with only one ‘r’. I’d rather they called it ‘Glen’.  As an aside, my son was walking our dog, an English Cocker called ‘Lloyd’ the other day, and he met another English Cocker called ‘Gary’, so it’s nice to see that at least plenty of dogs are keeping this old name alive. Here Gary! Good boy! Anyway, this is from a vineyard in the Tamar, more inland, sourced from vines planted around 1991.

Nice wine here, aromatic and spicy, with a Campari edge, over cherry and raspberry. It’s quite juicy, gently sappy and tangy, zest of orange peel, good energy, almost a bit of a bouncy rubbery feel to texture (and I’m thinking of silly putty), amaro herbs and sweet and sour cherry flavour. Really nice wine. Adult. And a bit Italianate. Well, the name Chatto does end with the letter ‘o’."
