Disgorged July 2021. Avizoise is sourced from old vines of up to 60 years of age, situated in the clay-rich (argilo-calcaire) Côteaux d’Avize vineyards of Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux. The richer soils of these neighbouring sites give a deeper, even more powerful and textural expression of Avize than found in the Minéral. The wine was aged entirely in 600-litre demi-muid, and the fermentation in bottle was carried out under cork rather than crown seal. The 2015 spent over five years on lees and was dosed at three grams per litre.
This is one of the great cuvées of the Côte des Blancs and the 2015 does not disappoint. It’s much more open than the 2014 was at the same stage; pulpy textured and pure-fruited with white peach, nectarine and almond-like characters leading to a gentle, pithy grip on the chalky, saline close. It’s a super-classy wine with the power and breed of a top white Burgundy.
The 2015 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Avizoise Grand Cru stands out in this range for its breadth and power. Lemon peel, savory herbs, dried flowers, grapefruit and mint lend a bit of upper register and aromatic presence. Slight vegetal notes, a characteristic of any 2015s, lurk beneath, while texturally the Avizoise is on the lighter side. For those reasons, I would not push my luck on aging. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2021. Drink 2021 - 2025.
