Region: Bourgogne, France
Grape: Pinot Noir
First Glance: mid-weight, supple Pinot Noir
Domaine Marechal is a moderately sized producer based in Bligny les Beaune, in the the plain of Pommard, just south of Beaune. With a strong emphasis on vineyard work and a light hand in the cellar, these are wines of elegance and transparency. Yields are kept low, and no chemical fertilisers are used in the vines.
The Bourgogne Rouge of the estate is aptly named for the gravelly soils in the vineyard, which is a plot located in the plain of Pommard, facing the Domaine's home base in Bligny. The gravel-rich terroir ensures good drainage and a warmer microclimate, making for a supple and elegant expression of Pinot Noir.
Grapes are totally destemmed, and only natural yeasts are used for fermentation.
Tasting Note:
"In 2019 the bouquet is again lovely, wafting from the glass in a fine blend of raspberries, black cherries, sweet soil tone and violets. On the palate the wine is medium bodied, lithe, focused and long, with a sappy core, good transparency and fine tension and grip on the long and vibrant finish. . Another great and characterful Bourgogne from Claude and in these times when Bourgogne Rouge can wholesale in three figures, this is a serious bargain."
