The Wine

This is Leroux’s second vintage of this cuvée and our first allocation. Leroux has worked with a small parcel in Les Vergelesses for five years, working hard to improve the quality of the viticulture before releasing the wine under its own label. Previous vintages were blended into the Savigny villages. Leroux calls out Les Vergelesses as his favourite Savigny 1er Cru, producing wines with “another layer of elegance” when seen alongside Lavières and Serpentières for example. One-third whole bunch was used for this wine.

The Review

“Dense deep purple, with an explosion of raspberry fruit, very perfumed, seems riper than Hauts Jarrons though in fact only 13.9%, and in fact rather too heady for optimum balance.” 87-89 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

“The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru comes across quite high-toned and less refined than the Aux Jarrons. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, crisp acidity, quite stony on the finish but rather short.” 87-89 points, Neal Martin, Vinous
