The Old Weka Pass Road Pinot Noir 2016 is a 6-barrel blend from select barrels of the Westbank, Roadblock 2009 and 2008, Slope, our younger parcels of fruit. The handling on skins is the same as for the Bell Hill but the French oak was 66% new. The wine was racked and blended after 12 months in barrel, it had 6 months in tank and was bottled on the 6th of November 2017 with a pH of 3.69, TA of 5.3 g/L, and alcohol of 13%. 1,897 bottles were produced.

I still have some of the first ever Old Weka Pass Road Pinot Noir bottles in cellar, they were made and released as the vineyard was maturing at that extraordinary site in North Canterbury and damn did I want to keep those first bottles – having visited the site in its infancy it felt righteous. Humble brag, blah blah, anyways… Hallowed turf up there with Pyramid Valley and Pegasus Bay not far off. My favourite wine region in NZ, anyway. And how’s the lamb there? Ripper.

This is sleek and fine pinot. No doubt there’s pedigree here. Grace and quiet power, a sheen of malty, spicy woody character quite strong over cherry and raspberry liquorice characters. It feels fancy from first, spicy, woody, berried sniff. It’s a wine many will relax with knowing that it portrays a fine wine paradigm with all the markers of judicious but present oak seasoning, potent fruit and good, light and neat tannin. A Ferrari in our midst.
