Region: Clare Valley, SA
First Glance: Bright and juicy, dry
In 2014 brothers Damon and Jono Koerner decided to start their own winemaking business, using fruit from their family vineyard in Watervale, as well as from a small range of trusted growers. The Koerners are a perfect example of the new wave of Australian winemakers. The approach is low-intervention without dipping into oddness. Harvesting grapes a little earlier for freshness, and focussing on vibrancy, texture and brightness, rather than opulence or perceived classicism.
The Watervale Riesling is sourced from the family Gullyview vineyard, supplemented with fruit from the Parish vineyard, both providing decidedly mature vine material. Fruit is hand harvested and ferments naturally in steel and ceramic amphora for 2 months, followed by a 6 month rest on lees in steel, to provide a gentle grippy texture and a small touch of leesy complexity, to the otherwise classic Clare profile of lively acidity and juicy, lime-tinged fruit.
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
Typically a bit of a ripper wine, with a little extra dimension for standards of Clare Valley Riesling.
Delicious expression here, supple, limey, appley, exotic spice, a touch savoury, glints with grapefruit pith and white flesh watermelon rind characters and finishes with a talc-like minerally charm. Fragrant, approachable, pushing to medium weight for the variety and just down right delicious and ready to go. Yum. And classy.
