The Wine:

An annual favorite running almost a decade for us now, Alain Verset continues to be one of the most overlooked producers in this famous appellation. Inheriting his single hectare plot from his uncle Noel Verset, Alain produces a mere 500 cases each year. Alain's daughter Emmanuelle took over in 2016 and has continued to make fantastic wines under her father's name. While they don't quite get to Alain's legendary uncle's level, they are one of the few in the appellation that still has entirely classic character and are beautiful bottles to bury in the cellar. These are very rare in the US and typically demanding more in price, 2018 is a bit riper, but the balance of Verset's wines is very noticeable, and while young in its current state, this probably won't need as much time to come around.

The Reviews :

Vinous (Josh Raynolds) 91-93 points! "Black cherry and cassis aromas are complemented by black pepper, peony and smoked meat nuances. Taut and structured on the palate, offering mineral-laced dark berry, bitter cherry and licorice flavors that slowly turn sweeter on the back half. Displays sharp delineation and floral drive on the youthfully tannic finish, which hangs on with strong, mineral persistence."

Winefront: The Verset name rings loud here. Cult wines ahoy! Here’s a new release. Importer: Whole Bunch
Feels youthful and strongly painted with whole bunch character, white pepper, sage, tomato leaf and sour cherries the motif in the bouquet. Incredible texture, so succulent, tugging at the palate on a web of fine tannins, but so much sweet, dark fruit flavour, a pretty dusting of cinnamon spice, a little alpine herb lift and a sense of meatiness and ferrous savouriness. So much going on. A seriously good, complex yet supremely elegant wine. Mike Bennie Rated : 96 Points, Tasted : Feb-21, Alcohol : 13.50%, Closure : Diam, Drink : 2023 - 2040+
