Chateau Cantemerle 2017

| /

The 2017 Cantemerle is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, the balance is Cabernet Franc. A popular Classed Growth Château from the southern Médoc, situated just below the village of Margaux, near to La Lagune. Cantemerle always provides reliable quality and value for money. The wines are never heavy or jammy. Good traditional claret that is usually sold at a modest price and with quality on the rise in recent vintages.
A real sleeper, the 2017 Cantemerle has turned out beautifully. Cedar, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and incense add pretty aromatic top notes in this super-refined Haut-Médoc. More than anything else, the 2017 stands out for its exceptional balance and alluring personality. This is a terrific showing. 2020 - 2037

Deep crimson. Sweet plum and vanilla on the nose. Like cherry ice cream. Balanced but without great depth. Tannins are well handled for the fruit weight – light and dry.

20% of the vineyards (those furthest from the estuary) had frost damage so there is 20% less wine than in a normal vintage - but the same as in 2005 and 2011. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot with the Cabernet Franc eliminated. Cedar and cassis on the nose here with a little wood smoke. The palate is midweight with fresh black fruits and a little red cherry framed by firm tannins. At the moment this is a little austere, and needs to build some flesh on its bones, but the fruit is ripe, cool and pure.
