Region: Yarra Valley, VIC
Grape: Shiraz
First Glance: Serious, detailed, great value Shiraz

The Crudo range is Luke Lambert's bang-for-buck wines, but lets be clear: there is nothing entry-level about this expertly built and seriously smart looking juice.

The Crudos are built in a slightly more rounded and approachable style than the estate Syrah and Chardonnay, but they keep very much in line with Luke's mission of making detailed, honest and well balanced Yarra Valley wines. This years Crudo wines are a benchmark for Lambert who states "there’s never been a Crudo release like". Quite a bit has happened over the past few years with regards to fruit source and farming methods for this range of wines, and this release sees all the fruits of that labour.

The Shiraz was fermented wild (with 60% whole bunches) and raised in 5,000-litre old oak cask before being bottled without fining or filtration.

The Best Cellars view:
We can do nothing but to agree with Luke's own assessment - this release is on another level. The wine does indeed seem to have an added layer of body, almost like a more solid base on which the flavours of gritty yet ripe black and blue fruit, and a detailed layer of spice and stalk-derived crunchiness, sit poised atop of. The combination of detail, structure and pure drinkability are more or less unrivalled at this price point.
