With the increase in Grenache portions, there was an increase in whole bunch fermentation to give the Grenache a little more upfront palate depth whilst picking a little earlier to preserve acidity and keep the blend tight.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAroma flavours dart around the from the darker spectrum of plums, cherries and chocolate cake batter to fresher raspberry, vanilla, pomegranate and cranberries. The framework of the wine is nice and full upfront, but then tails away to nice fresh acidity with a bed of drying, fine tannins. As is the case with cooler vintages there is an increase in white spice that sits nicely in the background, along with the five spice characters that are there from year to year. As per the norm, the Grenache is picked early to preserve acidity and keep the wine crisp, rather than leaning in to the more confected, boiled lolly, strawberries and cream spectrum. With the Mourvedre seeing quite a bit of oxidation as juice to loose green tannin and then heading into the nice mulberry\/peach iced tea zone. A mixture of stainless steel and barrel ferments with a good deal of lees contact (no stirring) in order to build up texture and soften any phenolics.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA slightly more restrained colour due to the season and slightly earlier picking of the Grenache. The 2022 has a very similar flavour spectrum to years previous, with rose petal, Turkish delight, red skin apples, raspberries, hibiscus tea and lemon peel over the nose and mouth. Yields were down, but in the cool conditions ripening was even and slow, with natural acids remaining very high. The resulting wine is delightfully savoury with cracked pepper nuance and firm structure. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe've chosen the Monastrell moniker over our previous use of Mataro. We found Mataro tends to have a reputation of being a big tannic beast which is certainly not what we try to produce. Our Monastrell is made to be more medium bodied, yet to have all the lovely spice and savoury notes. The hard soil and the thick-skinned berries naturally lead to some late, chewy tannin. Whole bunches in the ferment help to temper the weight of the wine as does earlier picking. Thirteen months in older French hogsheads helps to soften the wine. The aim is to express the perfume that sandy soil can yield in the fruit, framed but unobstructed by elaboration to bottle. And what a success it is. Blackberry, blueberry, cherry and damson plum scented with purple florals, anise and clove, a ferrous mineral note tempering. Mid-weight, supple of texture but shored up with a fine, detailed net of tannin - and that mineral tension - this is harmonious and poised, everything serenely balanced, unstretched.
